Melbury Bubb

Dorset

Melbury Bubb is a small village and civil parish in the county of Dorset in South West England, situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of the town of Sherborne. It is sited on Cornbrash limestone beneath the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs. The A37 trunk road between Dorchester and Bristol passes about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the west, on the other side of Bubb Down Hill. This hill used to be the site of a beacon. The first half of the village name derives from maele and burh Old English for "multi-coloured" and "fortified place" and the second half is a manorial name which derives either from a Saxon resident named 'Bubba' or from medieval lords of the manor. Dorset County Council's latest (2013) estimate of the parish population is 40.The parish church of St Mary has a 15th-century tower but the rest of the building was largely rebuilt in a 19th-century restoration. Its font however is carved out of the column of an upturned Saxon cross; it is elaborately carved, although the carvings are upside-down.Melcombe Bingham is a village in central Dorset, England, situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Dorchester, 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Sherborne and 8 miles (13 km) west-southwest of Blandford Forum. It is surrounded by chalk hills of the Dorset Downs, though the village itself is sited in a basin of greensand and gault. The 1970s housing estate surrounding Sopwith Crescent was built over a period of several years from the Oakley Straight end on former farmland. It was originally called Oakley Garden Village by the developers, but soon became incorporated into the adjacent older village.Meyrick Park has two rugby pitches and a clubhouse overlooking them used by Oakmeadians R.F.C. At the end of the main field there is a bowling green and cafe, and the golf course is served by a country club. The area is just north of St Stephen's Church.Measured directly, Milton Abbas village is about five miles (eight kilometres) southwest of the market town of Blandford Forum and 9+1„2 miles (15 kilometres) northeast of the county town of Dorchester. Milton Abbas civil parish extends from the village south to Bagber Farm, west to Bramblecombe Lane, north to Delcombe Head, and east to the top of Whatcombe Wood. The population of Moordown continued to grow, but this did not necessarily result in improved facilities. Most new houses in the district were equipped with wells, but when these dried up in the summer, men took a cart down to the Stour at Muscliff and used tubs to collect river water, which they then sold by the pail to Moordown householders. From 1895 Moordown came under the aegis of the Winton Parish Council, but it was only in 1897, when that council acquired urban powers, that it was in a position to do anything about the water supply. By August 1899 the water shortage was felt to be "a matter of some urgency" and a short-term solution was provided by a Mr. Hunt, who loaned the district council a 244-gallon water tank; he also arranged for a horse and cart to make three daily trips around the Moordown streets. The problem appears to have been resolved when Moordown and Winton were absorbed into the Borough of Bournemouth in 1901.The data used to make the observations below of Moor Crichel's demography in recent years comes from the 2011 Census for Moor Crichel parish which also includes Long Crichel.
