Its nearest town is Basingstoke, which lies approximately 4.1 miles (6.6 km) east from the hamlet.The hamlet is part of the civil parish of Oakley, and is part of the Oakley and North Waltham ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council. At the 2011 census it had a population of 518. A large portion of its land is arable, cultivated fields and scattered woodland leading towards the Basingstoke Canal and part of the EversleyTylney Park slightly scattered, ancient forest/woodland. These features skirt the north and south of the area, whereas more urban areas skirt the east and, after Old Basing, the west.Newnham is a civil parish with an elected parish council. The parish is in: Basingstoke and Deane District Council and equally Hampshire County Council.
