Hengistbury Head
Hengistbury Head is located on Bournemouth’s eastern side. It is steeped in history and holds immense international importance for conservation and archaeology in Bournemouth. It is home to over 500 species of plants and 300 species of birds, along with reptiles, small mammals, and various insects that all thrive here on this nature reserve. Hengistbury Head dates back to the stone and iron age of archaeology, making it a fantastic location for collecting microfossils as the cliffs are rich in fossil seeds. Its Headland is surrounded by sea, with Christchurch Harbour on one side and the sea on the other. Hengistbury Head is at the end of Broadway, Bournemouth, BH6 4EW. You’ll approach the large car park at the end of the road but beware of height restrictions. This Pay and Display car park closes and has locked gates at 10 pm. The Hiker Café is next to the car park, where the public toilets are located. Just a short walk from the Café is the Information and Visitor Centre, which gives you all the information you need to know about Hengistbury Head.
Hengistbury Head has beautiful walks through the Nature Reserve and along the coastline. If you take the circular route, it’ll take you along the clifftop path and down to the beach, then along the Mudeford sandbank, where you’ll find the famous Mudeford Beach Huts. Then you’ll walk back along Christchurch Harbour, enjoying the views of great boats and quayside properties. Or you can hike up to the top of the Head for the most amazing views across the bay, with Bournemouth to the West and Christchurch to the East. The Beach House Café is a Fish and Seafood Restaurant with breathtaking views of the sandspit’s harbourside. They offer beachside takeaway service in the most unique and idyllic setting.
Hengistbury Head is a facinating place not only for its wide variety of habitats including heathland, grassland, scrub, freshwater wetland and coastland but also for its internationally important archeology and ecology.
